3 Computer Superheroes

Elizabeth Feinler

Birth: March 2, 1931
Death: N/A (Still Alive)

Schooling: She graduated from West Liberty University in 1954 with a B.S. degree in chemistry. Then she received her masters degree in biochemistry at Purdue University.

Achievements: She managed and pioneered ARPANET, which turned into the Defense Data Network (DDN), and network information centers (NIC) for the Department of Defense. These two networks helped build the Internet into what it is today. Her group developed the first Internet "yellow-" and "white-page" servers as well as the first query-based network host name and address (WHOIS) server. Her team helped develop the domain-naming scheme such as .com and .gov. She also worked with NASA and helped develop the guidelines for a variety of NASA based websites. These are my sources!

Alan Turing

Birth:June 23, 1912, London, England
Death:June 7, 1954, Wilmslow, Cheshire

Major Academic events: The first well-known school he attented was Sherborne, at age 13, After Sherborne, he enrolled at the UNiversity of Cambridge, or King's college. He stayed from 1931 to 1934. In 1938, he recieved a Ph.D. from Princetion where he studied mathematics and cryptology for two years. He then went back to Cambridge, and finally attended the Government Code and Cypher School.

Achievements: One of his major achievements was a paper"On Computable Numbers, With An Application To The Entscheidungsproblem." This paper proposed the idea of a theoretical machine that could solve any computable problem, only given simple instructions on a paper. This became the basis of the modern computer. He also created a machine, called the Bombe, to break the Enigma Code. The Enigma Code was used by Germany in World War II to communicate, and it was very difficult to break. This shortened the war by two years. A minor achievement is his seminal paper on "Computing Machinery and Intelligence", written in 1950. This presented the idea that one day computers would think for themselves, which we now call Artificcial Intelligence. The paper also explained the Turing Test. It was used to determine if a computer could show the same intelligent behavior as humans.
